While taking the exhibit as its launching point, this book has provided the opportunity to offer much additional coverage of the Jewish experience in Southern Alberta up to and through the Second World War.

      Most importantly, it enabled the search for photographic content to be expanded, with the result that the photographs in these pages are even more representative of the period. As is to be expected of photographs ranging in time from the mid-1940's back to the late 1800's, their quality is varied. Please judge them not on the score of "technical" merit, but rather for their historical value. In addition, the text in the book version of Land of Promise has been greatly expanded. The first section offers a brief but pertinent historical background and is followed by sections dedicated to many aspects of Jewish life during the years under review. The book closes with a 22,500-word section of compact family histories.
